About the Course:

MA in History  is two year post graduation degree programme divided into four semesters. It is the study of the past and our interpretations of the past. The study focuses on the events, stories and narratives of historical societies, their practice, cultures, languages, art and many other things .

Salient Features:

One can go in for higher degree programme (M.A., M.Phil) in respective subjects. The M.A. Degree course enable the students to develop a deep understanding of the evolution of human civilizations over the ages, i.e., from the pre-historic to the recent times. The degree course also teaches the students about the socio-economic and cultural heritage of India and the World.

Program Education Objectives:

Build critical ability through competing interpretations and multiple narratives of the past, offer multi-causal explanations of major historical developments based on contextualized analysis of interrelated political, social, economic, cultural and intellectual processes. Evaluation of historical ideas, arguments and points of view, presentation of a summary of a topic in an organized, coherent, and compelling fashion orally or written.  Construct original historical arguments based on primary or secondary source material and ability to identify and describe the contours and stakes of conversations among historians within defined historiographical fields. Students will acquire basic historical research skills, including, effective use of libraries, archives, and databases.

Program Outcomes:

Through completion of a combination of courses, students become familiar with the political processes and structures, society and culture, political Ideas and institutions, historical thought and historiography, economy and society in India and the World.  Understand background of the religions, customs, institutions and administration and so on.  By analyzing the relationships between the past and the present, students will understand the social, political, religious and economic conditions of the people. She/he will be capable of leading and participate in discussion.  Develop interests in the study of history and activities relating to history. Students can collect old coins and other historical materials, participate in historical drama and historical occasions, visits places of historical interests, archaeological sites, museums and archives, read historical maps, charts and write articles on historical topics.  Study of history helps to impart moral and environmental education. History develops a feeling of patriotism in the hearts of the pupils.

Program Specific Outcomes:

Students enrolled in the programme complete a curriculum that exposes and trains students in a full range of essential skill and abilities. They will have the opportunity to master the following objectives.

  • To learn a basic narrative of historical events in a specific region of the world in a specific time frame
  • To articulate factual and contextual knowledge of specific places and time, to make careful comparison (across time, space and culture )
  • To understand and evaluate different historical ideas, various arguments and point of view.
  • To develop and appreciation of themselves and of other through the study of the past in local, regional, national and global context.
  • It instills an appreciation of the uniqueness of visual evidence and cultivate the particular skill of visual evidence to understands human activity of the recent and distant past.

Job Scope:

After completing the course, student can explore possibilities across a variety of fields, including archaeology, historical  research, academics, historical fiction, restoration of monuments and museums. Students can also pursue higher studies doctoral or post doctoral degrees such as M.Phil or Ph.D in history. Students can also pursue their own research and publish papers, books on historical events. They can also prepare for the civil services exam as it becomes quite easy for history graduate to qualify for the test.
